Principal’s Message to Parents – 19th November 2021

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy Children in Need Day! It's been a colourful day here, lovely to see children and staff in non-uniform and there have been lots of bear ears around school! Thank you to everyone for joining in with today and with anti-bullying week which has been a focus in school for the last 2 weeks. The theme ‘One Kind Word’ is such a powerful one.

Two of I CANs Trustees, Sue Gregory and Ann Gross visited us on Wednesday this week. Both are significant names in the field of education (namely Ofsted and DfE) so they were able to watch some of the teaching in school, look at our facilities and resources, meet with staff and some of our KS2 children, who were AMAZING! It was great to have their feedback and ideas. They were very impressed and are looking forward to coming back to see us more regularly from now on.

I have some staff news this week. Heather Benjamin who many of you will know from your first links with Dawn House School through the assessment service and who is now Head of 6th Form, is retiring at Christmas. In her 15 years here, when she arrived as Deputy Head, Heather has had a few roles! From Deputy to Head of Education, to Head of Assessment Service to her current Head of 6th form and SENCO role. Heather is a valued member of the Senior Leadership Group (SLG) and has led the 6th Form creatively leading to much innovation. Heather's highlights during this time are leading the teaching team to achieve Outstanding Teaching and Learning in Inspection; seeing pupils develop from their entry to their exit from school and seeing returning young people telling us about their successes beyond Dawn House School. She has enjoyed training and mentoring staff in school and through leadership qualifications. Her best memories are ‘Grease!’ her first Christmas Performance (remember those?) here, the amazing Leavers' celebrations (never a dry eye in the house!) and the annual and very memorable Robin Hoods Bay trips. Of course, none of these memories would be anything without the most important factor, our young people! This term will see lots of celebrations of Heather's time at Dawn House School and I’m sure you will join me in wishing her well when the day comes!

The muddy, marvellous middle!

It is now week 3 of our Dawn House School ‘Novel Writing Challenge!’ It's great to hear the buzz from the students, they are really excited! Do ask your child about this to see if they are taking part.

We can't wait to see the finished copies 😉!

No Pens Day Wednesday!

Wednesday 24th November! (See more information in the attachment to this Parentmail).  We look forward to a day of learning without writing!!

Parents' Day tomorrow!

We look forward to seeing parents who are able to attend tomorrow. As well as meeting with staff, there will be refreshments, some stalls and raffle tickets and Christmas cards on sale so please come with a shopping list! We will also have a small silent auction, always good for a bit of fun!

For those of you we wont see tomorrow, we also wish you a lovely weekend,

Best wishes.

Don’t forget to use our ‘Handle with care’ system if you need to.
