Principal’s Message to Parents - 5 November 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our first winter sports day was a resounding success! A big thank you goes to Mr Rose and his team for a very well organised and enjoyable day and for arranging for the sun to shine! Children (and staff) enjoyed the egg and spoon race, running competitions, an obstacle course and tin can alley amongst other activities. There was such a lovely atmosphere around school today, I wish we could bottle it!

Congratulations go to all of those who took part and supported the day, hopefully you will get to see your children’s medals later. The day was also linked to our house system, with Pine being the overall winners today- they take the cup for this Sports Day! We all agreed that a winter sports day is something that we would love to again next year. Thank you also for all of the parents who were able to join us. It was so lovely to see everyone and have parents here again.

The Friends of Dawn House also came up trumps with a tombola, a gift stall and raffle ticket stall (don’t worry, raffle tickets will continue to be on sale for the rest of this term) and 6th form ran a DVD sale. Thank you for your support of this event- so far we have raised almost £200!

Thank you too for all of the Amazon wishlist gifts we have received in school- all very gratefully received!

The next event in school is Parents Day on Saturday 20th November- 10-4pm. We are trialling using Parentmail to book appointments this year so you should receive something from us to book your appointments on Wednesday next week (not today as I have told some people today). Please bear with us and any feedback will be gratefully received.

Premises news

The Premises team have been busy since the summer break, ensuring Dawn House is looking smart, safe and is the clean environment that our students and staff deserve. So far they have completed the decoration of prime chimes, installing new lighting and ceiling tiles alongside a complete upgrade to the fire alarm system and the hot water system in the rest of the chimes building.

External lighting has been improved around the site, with the upgrade of over 50 light fittings to energy efficient LED.

Classroom areas in the main building have had all the lighting replaced with versatile LED lighting that can be changed to suit the needs of the children. This creates a more comfortable learning environment and also helps the school reduce its carbon footprint.

To avoid those winter chills, 6 boilers have been upgraded around the site, to energy efficient units with a boiler management system. We have also upgraded electrical distribution boards around site to meet current standards.

The reception has been given a makeover, with new LED lighting, and a lick of paint. We have also turned an old changing area into a quiet space for the children to work with our O.T's.

The main transformation though has been to our sports hall, creating a light and versatile area for various activities for students to utilise. New flooring, decoration and LED lighting with dimmable controls has been warmly welcomed by our students who are already enjoying the area.

The junior area is receiving a full refurbishment with new lighting, flooring, decoration and toilets. This should be finished by the end of the week and we are looking forward to maximising a previously underused area of the building.

Last week saw the SI room completely decorated and given a clean, fresh look.

This weekend sees the start of the replacement of the roof for the main school building. This is a 28 week project but will hopefully cause as little disruption as possible to the students learning and wellbeing. Please take care around site and park with consideration.

Wow! They have been busy! It’s great to see Dawn House School having a significant facelift. Many thanks to Glenn and his team. You will be able to see some of these developments on Parents day- any feedback on this also gratefully received.

Next week

Next week is OT week. Your children will be taking part in lots of additional activities which I will tell you about next Friday. It will be interesting to hear if they can tell you about any of the different things they do!

Don’t forget school photos on Thursday- school uniforms please!

Have a safe and enjoyable Bonfire Night and weekend,

P.S A reminder that if your child leaves home in the morning a little unsettled and you want to quickly tell us, so we know to expect a tricky start to the day, a quick email (that we can follow up later) to the tutor and/or core team with ‘Handle with Care’ in the email title will ensure that we are aware.
