*Manchester Marathon*

Daisy Geary – sister of Joel who left in June 2019 said…

‘The Marathon was great, I loved it (although it was a very hot day)

I’m also really pleased with the fundraiser- as it’s come out to £855 ! 😊 (all for Dawn House School- hooray and thank you!)

Thanks again for all the support and the lovely T-shirts’

Thank you to everyone who supported Daisy and most importantly to Daisy!

I think we should invite her to come in and visit, very soon!

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week has been Mental Health Awareness week and our focus has been about Community.

During the week we have shared resources with staff on how we can think about our own self-care so that we can keep ourselves well and able to work with your young people.

Staff have received posters asking you to think about ‘My Whole self’ MOT and ‘Empower Half Hour’ as well as the list of staff trained in Mental Health First Aid

As the focus this week has been on Community staff have been asked to finish the week by reflecting on what community means to them – What makes you feel connected at work?

Alongside this some staff have been accessing the Youth Mental Health First Aid training course to add to our list of staff that are already Mental Health First Aiders or trained in Mental Health Awareness.

Here is a link to a parents guide to looking after your Mental Health.

Performing Arts Assembly

This began our week on Monday- we watched a film ‘Tunnel of Fate’ made by the KS4/5 option group; we heard musical and singing solos and duets; there was a percussion performance; the Makaton choir performed 2 songs and we finished with the dance group. What a spectacle! Such talent and confidence. Well done to all involved.

The ski group went out on the dry slopes again…what progress they are making, both in the skiing and in their organisation skills in getting their equipment together and independently getting ski boots and skis on!

EHCP

Jane Harris, Speech and Language Uk Chief Executive, has asked us to share  a news story out this week, where a DfE adviser has speculated about whether EHCPs should be scrapped. While we know these processes could be massively improved for both children and families, our position is that for the minority of children with complex speech and language challenges a legally enforceable plan that co-ordinates support across education, health and care is essential. It is important to remember that most EHCPs are initiated by schools and early years settings, not parents because professionals as well as families recognise children need extra support. We will continue to advocate for this position and we hope that our voice along with other charities in the Disabled Children’s Partnership will help to make it clear that this is not a change that can be done with consent. We are also helping with some DCP research on what parts of the current EHCP processes are helpful and which need to be improved. Yet another busy week. Senior Leaders are in school tomorrow too and will be able to share news about some changes we are trialling next half term, ready for September. Watch this space!

Have a good weekend,

Jenny

If your child leaves home in the morning a little unsettled and you want to quickly tell us, so we know to expect a tricky start to the day, a quick email (that we can follow up later) to the tutor and/or core team with ‘Handle with Care’ in the email title will ensure that we are aware.
