No Pens Day is Back – Wednesday 20th May 2026
Yes, it’s back! This year’s No Pens Day will take place on Wednesday 20th May 2026, and we’re proud to be getting involved once again.
In the UK, 1 in 5 children are struggling with talking and understanding words in the classroom. Without the right support, these children can feel left out and left behind. Everyday experiences that many of us take for granted—such as sharing a joke with friends, learning new ideas in class, or joining in games—can be difficult to access.
No Pens Day is a national event led by Speech and Language UK, encouraging schools to put down their pens for the day and focus on learning through talking and listening. Communication takes many forms, so activities include speech, signs, symbols, visuals, technology, and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), helping to make learning inclusive for all pupils.
At Dawn House School, we will be taking part in No Pens Day on 20th May 2026. On this day, no writing will be used unless writing is a strategy that supports your child. Throughout the day, students will take part in a range of engaging activities built into their lessons, all designed to develop speech, language, and communication skills. These may include activities such as show and tell, nature walks, and interactive discussions.
No Pens Day is also an opportunity to raise vital funds to support children and young people with speech and language needs. Many schools tell us this is one of the most enjoyable and memorable days of the year for both pupils and staff.
If you have connections with other schools, please encourage them to sign up. There is a fantastic selection of free resources available to help plan the day and make it a success.
If you would like to support the event at Dawn House School, we kindly ask for a £1 donation, which can be sent in with your child on the day.

Together, we can celebrate communication, raise awareness, and help ensure every child has the support they need to be heard.
