On Friday 14th November, our school came together for a dynamic and immersive Black History House Event, designed to educate, inspire, and empower students through hands-on cultural experiences. With a focus on rhythm, movement, art, history, identity, and personal reflection, pupils explored a rich variety of activities delivered by passionate staff and skilled external facilitators.

The day offered nine unique workshops, each highlighting different aspects of Black history, heritage, and expression.

African Drumming – Beat Feet

Students learned traditional African rhythms and drumming techniques, working as an ensemble to create powerful beats. The session encouraged teamwork, musicality, and cultural appreciation.

African Dancing 

Pupils explored energetic African dance styles, expressing rhythm and storytelling through movement. The workshop promoted confidence, creativity, and physical expression.

Food Tasting

A delicious selection of traditional foods allowed students to discover new flavours, learn cultural histories, and appreciate the diversity of African and Caribbean cuisine.

Indigenous Mask Making 

Students designed masks inspired by indigenous cultures, exploring symbolism, identity, and tradition through artistic techniques and imaginative design.

 Brazilian Samba Drumming 

This lively session introduced pupils to the vibrant world of samba drumming. Through rhythm, coordination, and group performance, students experienced the energy and joy of Brazilian musical culture.

What Makes Me Powerful

In this reflective workshop, pupils explored their own strengths and sources of empowerment. Students illustrated their fists and wrote affirmations around them to celebrate individuality and confidence.

Aboriginal Art 

Pupils learned traditional Aboriginal painting techniques, patterns, and stories, creating artwork inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Australia’s indigenous peoples.

“I Have a Dream”

Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., students expressed their hopes and dreams for the future. Through hand outlines, thought clouds, or creative writing, they explored themes of justice, equality, and aspiration.

Freedom March Obstacle Course

A fun and symbolic physical challenge! Pupils navigated hurdles, stepping stones, and carried a “freedom flag,” experiencing a creative interpretation of the journey to resilience and liberation.

A Day of Learning, Expression & Empowerment

The Black History House Event was a powerful celebration of culture, creativity, and courage. Our pupils engaged deeply with each activity, learning not only about Black history but also about community, identity, and the importance of standing together.
