Students in KS3 JC have been exploring the main causes of World War I, developing their understanding of how tensions in Europe escalated into a global conflict. As part of their learning, pupils have focused on key factors including the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, militarism, and the complex system of alliances between countries.

To bring this topic to life, students took part in an interactive activity recreating the alliance system using a human domino effect. Each student was assigned a country and made “promises” to support their allies, mirroring the agreements made by real nations before 1914. When one country encountered trouble, its allies were required to step in and offer support.

This practical activity clearly demonstrated how quickly a small disagreement could grow into a much larger conflict, involving many countries in a short space of time. Students were able to see first-hand why, when war broke out in 1914, it spread rapidly across Europe and beyond.

By learning through participation and discussion, pupils developed a deeper understanding of the causes of World War I and the powerful role alliances played in turning a single event into a worldwide war.
