Principal’s message to families – 25 September 2026

To celebrate DLD day this year, Speech and Language UK are inviting our students with DLD to participate in creating a piece of artwork to be submitted and displayed at a special exhibition in the Houses of Parliament.

We are planning on gathering these students together during Assembly/Votes4schools over the next few weeks as an opportunity for them to create their artwork.

There will also be some activities in school to raise awareness of DLD, so hopefully there will be lots of photos on the website to follow.

This half term, staff have taken part in training to further enhance the support we provide for pupils. This has included external Prevent training to help staff stay informed about current risks and concerns affecting young people, a new Allergy Team with four trained Designated Allergy Leads, and allergy awareness training for all staff. Our Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) teams have also shared practical strategies to support learning and communication within the classroom. Departments have reflected on their practice and set action plans for the year ahead to further strengthen the provision and opportunities available to pupils across all key stages.

In assembly this week, the winners of the Summer reading challenge received a book token to spend on a book of their choice. Thank you to you all for taking part and sharing your amazing photos. I’ve been asked today if we can have another reading challenge in the winter, so please watch this space!

The first meeting of the Design Club happened this week. This is part of a research project we are taking part in with Kings College London. We’ll tell you more about it next week.

Today, we held our very first Tea Party in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, and what a fantastic day it was!

Our students have been busy baking in preparation for the event, showing great enthusiasm and creativity as they made a delicious selection of cakes and treats. It was wonderful to see their hard work pay off and to watch them proudly share their creations with others.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, enjoyed a cuppa and a cake, and supported this very worthwhile cause. The event was filled with smiles, conversation, and a real sense of community.

We are incredibly proud of our students for the effort they put into making the day such a success, and grateful to everyone who helped make our first Macmillan Tea Party so special.

Our Dawn House School Christmas Fayre planning has begun! The staff Friends of Dawn House team have already been busy- we would love parents to join us, with all of your ideas too, so please let me know if you can spare some time.

The Fayre will take place alongside Parents Day on Saturday 28th November.

There will be all of the usual fun, games, music and stalls!
