Our vision: Working towards successful futures

What a busy week!

Our week began with 2 very informative assemblies. Lower school heard all about World Refugee Day and how and why we support people from different countries who have been displaced by unrest in their home countries. They all thought about what they like about being at home and shared an understanding of how they would feel if they could not be at home.

Upper school heard from PC Katie about what ‘Hate Crimes’ are and how the police respond to these when they are reported to them. The law recognises five types of hate crime on the basis of:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Disability
  • Sexual orientation
  • Transgender identity

Any crime can be prosecuted as a hate crime if the offender has either:

demonstrated hostility based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity

Or

been motivated by hostility based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity

PC Katie also talked about misogyny and inappropriate views and prejudice against women, which will not be tolerated in society and not at Dawn House School.

This week we also had an amazing theatre performance of ‘The Secret Garden’ (my favourite childhood book!) which all children and staff enjoyed. We have booked the company to come again next year to deliver their production of ‘The Jungle Book’ (another personal favourite!)

It was our options event on Wednesday- an incredibly well attended session and a very busy afternoon. Please do take a look at all of the amazing options available to our young people.

On Thursday we hosted  ‘Singing Hands’ who really did make Dawn House School sing out loud, accompanied by Makaton signing. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and we hope to do this again in the future.

Our motor vehicle maintenance group also visited Coventry Transport Museum on Thursday.

Looks like they had a great time…

Celebration!

A big well done to Alfie in KS3,  who attended a Karate competition in York last weekend, and won a silver medal!

He has now been selected to take part in the WKO England squad at the world championships later in October – how amazing is that!

Coming up…

Preparations are well and truly afoot for the Leavers event next Thursday evening. There is a real disco flavour with fluorescence through and through! I can’t wait for the celebration party!

We are all systems go for our Sports Day and Summer Fair on the 11th July. Thank you for all of the bottles and tombola items already sent in ( keep them coming!). This week’s main ask is for any gift items for our Silent Auction. This is a great fund raiser, usually having signed items, gift items, vouchers and so on. All contributions gratefully received. Our admin team are currently contacting lots of local companies to ask for donations so please do the same if you have any contacts. Many thanks.

Heatwave

We keep hearing more and more about the current heatwave and how long it may last. Just another reminder to send you children into school with a water bottle, high factor suncream and a hat. We are adapting activities where necessary.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend. Some of us will be here hosting the Mikeys Wish foundation event- looking forward to telling you all about it next week.

Jenny

If your child leaves home in the morning a little unsettled and you want to quickly tell us, so we know to expect a tricky start to the day, a quick email (that we can follow up later) to the tutor and/or core team with ‘Handle with Care’ in the email title will ensure that we are aware.
